The Arc Of The Screenplay by Andrew Levinson
A look at 20 of the most popular films and their similar five act story structure.
Using the TMDb movie database and The Script Lab's Five Plot Point Breakdown blog, I was able to look at the top 20 rated films and map their plot point timing (% of way through movie) along the x-axis. From there I used the standard deviation to visualize (the bell curves) the variance in the timing of these moments across the different films.
This exploration reveals the similarities and differences in writing a classic Hollywood 3-act screenplay.
