IEPS DATA by Odd.studio

IEPS DATA is a state-of-the-art platform that democratizes health data to monitor and support evidence-informed policies in Brazil. It allows different stakeholders to explore, compare, monitor, share and download more than 200 selected and curated health indicators in an interface designed to facilitate access and understanding.
It is an initiative from the Brazilian Public Health Study Institute (IEPS), an independent nonprofit that believes every Brazilian should have access to quality health care. To achieve that, they support stakeholders to design, develop and implement evidence-based public policies by delivering transparent and accessible data.
At Odd.studio we design and prototype data products, from organizations all over the world. With IEPS, we have developed the strategy, journey, visual interface, and information system of the 200 indicators they have cleaned, organized, and curated for the 5,600 Brazilian municipalities. The platform, IEPSDATA.org, guarantees autonomy for stakeholders, researchers, journalists, and the population to explore the ten years of data in five levels of aggregation (municipality, micro, macro-regions, state, and country).
After testing over a thousand visualizations, we have come up with two solutions to answer the questions mapped:
First, an interactive interface with four combinations of visualizations that allow different ways to explore the indicators:

1. A time series that compares the municipality's growth or decline to other levels of aggregation;
2. A choropleth map that combines an interactive ranking;
3. A Scatter plot and table that show all municipalities but focus on the comparison to other levels of aggregation, combining indicators to sociodemographic data.
4. Grouping and stacked bar visualizations that show how municipalities are grouped by higher or lower values.

The combination of visualizations enriches the platform, supporting stakeholders to answer more complex questions, and bringing transparency to the information, allowing it to be compared from different perspectives.
And second, an overview of the 12 primary health indicators in that municipality. A direct, one-single-screen view of the sociodemographic data for cities and health regions. It brings an expert birds-eye view for non-experts to evaluate their city’s data.
All visualizations follow a comparative information system for different levels of aggregation and support text that explains the origin and importance of indicators. Features include tooltips, interactivity between combined charts, sharing and downloading high-resolution visualizations, and easy-to-change prompts as titles for the charts — everything to facilitate its use and comprehension.
Despite being rich and open, Brazil's health data is dispersed in different systems. Plus, it doesn't mean it is accessible or actionable. This platform brings them to one place, making it easy to download, visualize and learn more about their data.
To reach the final product, we had a thorough research process, interviews with experts, design explorations, and user testing. This project is one-of-a-kind and an essential tool in the hands of people with the ability to manage evidenced-based policies. We hope you enjoy it as much as we do.
