How the political maps of Israel and Palestine have changed by Neue Zürcher Zeitung
With roots stretching back more than 100 years, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has proved to be one of the world's most intractable. Through animated maps, we explain how the political boundaries in this conflict have gradually shifted over time.
Because both sides routinely dispute historical facts, we show each map twice: Once from an Israeli perspective and then again from a Palestinian perspective. Different areas of the map are highlighted as we alternate between these viewpoints, and a distinctive vocabulary is used to describe the same event. Between the maps, we show the number of people who have fallen victim to the numerous wars tied to this dispute.
First and foremost, this visual article provides our readers with an overview of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. But the maps and visualisations also give them a sense of how differently history can be interpreted and lived – depending on which narrative you see.
