Covering Global Issues in Miami by University of Miami
Many of humanity’s most challenging issues are shaped by cross-border forces. To address, and report on, these issues, collaboration is critical. That is why the University of Miami and Universidad de Navarra came together to create the “Covering Global Issues in Miami” course.
All 28 students enrolled in this 2-week course experienced the amalgam of cultures and ethnic enclaves that make up Miami. This interdisciplinary team-taught summer course attracted 26 students from the Universidad de Navarra, in Spain, who are studying global journalism.
Grouped into 6 teams, students developed multimedia stories about different communities, focusing on how globalization is grounded in people’s lives. The final product is a website featuring a globe that allows readers to “fly” above the city to find each geolocated story. Due to it’s multicultural focus, the project also visualizes the authors themselves, by tracing the life paths that led students and faculty here, to Miami.
From gentrification and immigrant incorporation to climate change, students delved deep into some of the most pressing issues affecting residents of South Miami.
