Modern colonialism began in the 15th century and
peaked in 1914, when Europeans ruled a majority of the
world’s countries. Decolonization began after World War I
and accelerated following World War II. Many present-
day boundaries were set during the colonial era. Here we show the major global powers and their spheres of influence in 1914.
