Farming Futures: A case of small holder Indian farmers by NID

Developed as an academic exercise, this project examines the agency disparity between small and large-hold Indian Farmers. The project uses a system of six capitals (economic, social, natural, human, material and cultural) as a proxy for agency and assesses the farmer’s access to these capitals. It also maps out the interactions (between various stakeholders) that enable the exchange of these capitals. In doing so, it brings out key insights that underline the motivations of small farmers and their challenges in negotiating agency. The summation of the project is a data visualization that captures all of this information via a giga map. The project then goes on to develop four design briefs that use these learnings to question the existing system and imagine new possibilities.
