On the brink: Explore what’s at risk of disappearing as the climate crisis rapidly alters our world. by CNN
From the vast lakes of the US to the mangrove forests of Bangladesh, everything is at stake as the world heats up. In this piece for Earth Day 2023, we look at 16 species and landscapes at risk of disappearing across rising oceans, frozen poles and fast-heating land. Just a tiny fraction of what we stand to lose, our selections are diverse in geography but united by one thing – their vulnerability to the climate crisis.
Because we all must be aware of our climate and surroundings, we ask the audience of this interactive to navigate to a species or landscape that speaks to them. Each is illustrated carefully in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop, to summarize its beauty in a single icon. To call attention to a variety of threats, we selected several places that humans rarely frequent — such as glaciers and coral reefs — and at least one that may feel very close to many of us — a morning cup of coffee.
