Overgrown Tree - Evolution of Evolutionary Thinking is an interactive scientific visualization of microbial heredity dynamics demonstrating an evolvement of the evolutionary metaphor from a tree to a three-dimensional network. Based on analysis 180 of prokaryotic genomes, the network is explained via a gradual assembly and narrative approach. With a subtle but dynamic color palette of petrol and red, fine lines provide space for the data. Background knowledge and, following on from this, concrete knowledge about the specific features of the network can be fathomed via the main graphic, explanatory text and illustrations. Complexity is both emphasized here as essential and stripped of its overwhelming impact.
