Turkey’s ongoing battle to remove 200 million tons of earthquake rubble by Neue Zürcher Zeitung

This visual investigation explores the immense challenges Turkey faces in removing around 200 million tons of rubble after the deadly 2023 earthquake. The article combines investigative research, data-driven analysis, and visual storytelling to shed light on the immense challenge that countries face after natural catastrophes.

Using satellite imagery, we mapped the destruction, particularly in cities such as Antakya, and analyzed data to illustrate the scale of the crisis. Interviews with representatives of the UN Development Program provide deep insights into the health, environmental, and logistical problems associated with dealing with the rubble. The article also shows the progress made through innovative recycling measures and potential sustainable solutions. Visual elements such as maps, illustrative explanatory graphics, and photographs support the narrative and make the complex subject matter tangible for the reader.
