European Life Index (eLife) by Ilie Cristian Dorobat
Assessing population well-being is as complex as it is sensitive, requiring careful consideration of various factors contributing to individuals’ quality of life. While established metrics such as GDP, HDI, and WHOQOL provide valuable insights, they address only a limited subset of the numerous indicators significantly influencing population well-being. These traditional measures often fail to capture the multifaceted nature of well-being, which spans economic, social, health, environmental, and psychological dimensions.
The European Life Index (eLife) integrates 76 most important factors identified by Eurostat as having a significant impact on population well-being, allowing users to explore and visualize not only the trends of individual indicators but also combinations of diverse factors or even the entirety of the key indicators aggregated into a single, holistic measure – the Quality of Life Index (QoLI).
At the heart of eLife lies the QoLI aggregation formula, a scientifically robust methodology developed through extensive research conducted as part of the author’s doctoral thesis. This formula was designed to address the critical challenge of consolidating multiple heterogeneous indicators into a unified measure.
By combining advanced data analytics with a user-friendly visualization interface, eLife empowers policymakers, researchers, and citizens to gain deeper insights into the dynamics of population well-being. It provides a powerful tool for identifying strengths, uncovering weaknesses, and monitoring progress across various domains, ultimately fostering more informed decision-making aimed at improving the quality of life across European societies.
