Global Warming by Iain Morrison at Gray’s School of Art

The Paris Agreement is a legally binding international treaty adopted at the UN Climate Change Conference (COP21) in France in 2015. Its goal is to limit the average global temperature increase to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.

The World Meteorological Organization confirmed that global temperatures in 2024 exceeded 1.5°C, making it the hottest year on record. This conclusion was reached after reviewing data from scientists in the U.K., U.S., Japan, and the EU.

The UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change indicates that crossing the 1.5°C threshold risks triggering far more severe climate change impacts, including more frequent and intense droughts, heatwaves, and rainfall.

António Guterres, United Nations Secretary-General, said in a statement responding to the record global temperatures in 2024: “There’s still time to avoid the worst of the climate catastrophe. But leaders must act – now.”
