The 2024 US Presidential Election Eclipse by Kenneth Field
This map portrays the US states as a Dorling cartogram with each state shown as a circular symbol proportional to the total votes cast. It illustrates the winner in each state using a solid colour fill, and the loser with a pattern fill. ‘Other’ votes are shown as a thin sliver of no fill between the winner and loser though the percentage is often so small (and immaterial) it is often imperceptable. Additional metrics are encoded using moonpie symbols that show the percentage obscuration caused by the winning party (akin to a solar eclipse); and the proportion of their victory (or loss). Democratic wins are to the left of the symbols, and Republican wins to the right. Symbols are rotated by the amount of swing between 2020 and 2024. Anti-clockwise rotation indicates a swing to Republican (%), and clockwise to Democrats (there weren’t any!). A solid external symbol border indicates a win by a margin of more than a 3%, while a dashed outer border represents a marginal win by less than 3%. These are the states Trump narrowly won that ultimately led to his overall win. A solid internal edge to the winning party represents a hold to that state between 2020 and 2024 while a ‘bite mark’ represents a flipped state, where the winning party has literally eaten into the previous margin. Labels identify the state, and also the number of electoral college votes that state holds. Each state in the border is shown proportional to the electoral college votes they contribute, and in order of margin of victory (%) from highest partisan support at bottom centre in darker colours. States with an additional hatch line fill are those that flipped Democrat to Republican in 2024. Needing 270 electoral college votes to win, Trump gained 312 votes, and Harris gained 226 votes. The overall display contains a dense amount of information, represented in a simple, and engaging form.
