Trickle Down by Daniele Gibney

Trickle down is about climate and injustice. It visualises differences, and also some similarities, between the carbon emissions, climate risk and climate vulnerability of high-GDP and low-GDP nations. Its sand timer layout plays with the idea of trickle down economics, showing that what in fact trickles down is not wealth, but vulnerability to the impacts of climate change.

Trickle Down is cross stitched in stranded cotton on white aida fabric. Its finished size is 60 x 50 centimetres.

Each country small multiple visualises carbon emissions per capita, climate risk index (a measure of the extent to which countries were impacted by climate-related extreme weather events in 2000-2019), and climate vulnerability index (which measures a country’s exposure, sensitivity and ability to adapt to the negative impact of climate change). Each small multiple also has a colour-coded corner indicating the region in which the country is located. The data sources are Our World in Data, ReliefWeb, and ND-GAIN.
