The disproportionate impact of family violence by Guardian Australia
This graphic illustrates the disproportionate impact of family and domestic violence on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. In 2021-22 - the latest data available - Indigenous women aged 15 and over were 33 times more likely to be hospitalised due to family violence than non-Indigenous Australian women. Indigenous men were 27 times more likely to be hospitalised than non-Indigenous Australian men.
The disproportionate impact of family and domestic violence is little known or discussed in the Australian media. It is also a problem that needs to be illustrated with rates and multiplications, due to the huge disparities in the size of the populations - a fact that can serve to hide the problem. But focus on rates also risks being cold and abstract. Using drawings of people to highlight the disparity cut through, and brought focus to the real people bearing the brunt of family violence.
