Unspoken Networks by York University
My Thesis, The Unspoken Project, is comprised of two main deliverables—a publication piece, and an abridged data visualization—which addresses how the historical evolution of hidden symbols and signalling among queer women has integrated into modern culture. Unspoken Networks is a concise data visualization that adheres to the same visual system as its counterpart, resulting in a cohesive and simplified presentation of the information.
Unspoken Networks is a data visualization project that maps the responses of over 50 queer women who submitted objects that resonate with their identities. From the objects and anecdotes provided, I coded the qualitative data to identify six core themes that connect these items, creating a unique narrative that reflects the 'unspoken' language among queer women. Using network diagrams, I illustrate how these symbols shape individual identities, foster community, and preserve queer history, highlighting their significance in both personal and collective queer experiences.
