Gaps of the Pandemic by Louise Shorten
This is an abstract piece of art which was created using acrylic paints on canvas. It’s based on a visualisation of the days from 1st Jan 2020 to 31st Dec 2021. It represents different phases of the Covid 19 pandemic across the two year period. The gold strip at the centre separates the two years, with 2020 on the left and 2021 on the right. The blue strip at the start of 2020 represents the lead up period at the beginning of 2020 as we were hearing about cases across the world. On March 12th the schools closed in Ireland and didn’t open again until September. The black strips show the periods that ]the schools were closed in Ireland. It is these gaps in education that inspired the name of the piece ‘Gaps of the Pandemic’. I used yellow to show the summer months of July and August each year. The shades of pink represent the stretches of time where things were in a constant state of flux and stages of reopening and adjusting.
