Cities Moving by Liuhuaying Yang

This project presents an engaging, continuously updated dataset on urban mobility patterns, tracking kilometers traveled by different transport modes—active mobility, public transport, and cars—across 876 cities in 61 countries. It compares how different modes of transport—active mobility, public transport, and cars—contribute to the overall kilometers traveled in each city. The tool allows for comparison of mobility patterns by city, region, income group, and population size, revealing how these factors shape transportation choices.
Multiple visualization techniques, including scrollytelling, are employed to engage audiences and bring the dataset to life. Ternary diagrams illustrate the balance between transport modes, highlighting trends across different regions, income groups, and city sizes. An interactive map at the end of the visualization provides local mobility data, facilitates comparisons of urban areas globally, and offers historical data points for each city. With ongoing updates to the dataset, the visualization stays current, offering dynamic insights into urban mobility.
The project has been used in educational events, engaging children in exploring mobility patterns and imagining sustainable cities, while reaching thousands of participants through science showcases to foster discussions about urban transportation, sustainability, and factors influencing mobility trends worldwide.
