Navigate the obstacles to transportation electrification. by Radio-Canada

Electrifying transportation in Quebec is an ambitious yet complex endeavor. Of the 7.3 million registered vehicles in the province, only 3.6% are electric, reflecting hurdles such as high purchase costs, limited range, and charging challenges. Popular models like the Tesla Model 3 and Kia Niro PHEV showcase varying levels of affordability and range, but even with government subsidies, electric vehicles (EVs) remain costlier upfront compared to gas-powered cars. Despite this, EVs are up to 75% cheaper to operate over time, thanks to lower fuel and maintenance costs.

Range anxiety persists, especially during long trips, as charging stations are less common and recharging takes longer than refueling. Seasonal weather further impacts range, with cold winters reducing efficiency. Planning trips carefully, utilizing home charging, and adopting energy-efficient driving habits are key to mitigating these challenges.

While hybrid plug-ins offer a compromise for hesitant drivers, fully electric options deliver significant long-term savings and emissions reductions. As EV infrastructure and affordability improve, Quebec’s transition to sustainable transportation continues to gain momentum.
