This is what Germany's government is spending money on by Der SPIEGEL
The German governing coalition of the SPD, Greens and FDP repeatedly argued fiercely about money during its time in office. After the start of the Russian war against Ukraine, measures to combat the resulting inflation and a budget ruling by the Federal Constitutional Court that further restricted the government's financial leeway, it became increasingly difficult to reach agreements within the coalition. The budget for 2024 became the acid test. The government repeatedly missed self-imposed deadlines. Several billion euros were missing. German politicians discussed the budget for weeks, and for a long time it was unclear whether the coalition would be able to reach an agreement at all.
A country's budget is difficult for normal citizens to grasp, the sums involved are too large. DER SPIEGEL therefore explained the 2024 budget, when it was finally united, in a visual and data-driven scrollytelling, breaking it down to the individual person: How many euros per capita will go to which ministry? Where will savings be made compared to the previous year, in which projects will additional investments be made?
We were able to prepare our explanatory article with preliminary data and update it with the final figures the night the agreement was finally reached. In this way we were able to offer our users context and depth to the current news situation the very next day. For the visual implementation we used Svelte.
