Visualising The 2023 Ryder Cup by Matt Miller
Team Europe claimed a resounding victory at the 2023 Ryder Cup, defeating the U.S. team 16.5-11.5 at the Marco Simone Golf & Country Golf Club in Rome. After losing the cup in 2021 at Whistling Straits, Europe bounced back with a dominant performance across all three days in 2023. It stretches Europe's unbeaten home record beyond 30 years and also means the past five Ryder Cups have been won by the home side.
This personal project visualises the ebbs and flows of every single match during the three days of the 2023 Ryder Cup. My aim was to create a visual fingerprint of each match, providing a clear representation of how it unfolded and the back-and-forth between each team. I have presented the matches in the order of when they finished (based on live data during the event), rather than by match number. That way we can see how the total score adds up during each session. Strokes Gained stats from Data Golf are also represented, providing some insights into the performance and contribution of each player. The matches can either be displayed as individual prints, or as a set of visualisations for each day.
