Arctic Sea Ice Decline, 2022 vs 1980 by Silvia Romanelli

In 2022, the extent of the Arctic Sea ice was 34% less than in 1980.

In 1980, it stretched through 8.2 million square km, while in 2022 it only covered 5.4 million square km: a loss of 2.8 million square km of ice (late summer data).

This visualization was shortlisted in the European Space Agency “Little Pictures for Climate” competition, in 2023.
