"Amores Sáficos: Dos Caras de la Moneda" (Sapphic Love: Two Sides of the Coin) is a groundbreaking data visualization multiplatform project that explores and documents intimate partner violence within sapphic relationships in Mexico. This initiative emerged from a critical gap in Mexico's national LGBTQ+ data collection (ENDISEG), which currently lacks
specific metrics for same-gender relationship dynamics.
The project combines traditional survey methodology with innovative mobile-first design to create an accessible, interactive platform for data collection and visualization. During
the 2024 Marcha Lencha in Mexico City, we conducted a comprehensive survey that gathered responses from 89 participants about their experiences with different forms of
violence in sapphic relationships.
The visualization approach prioritizes both clarity and sensitivity, using an intuitive dotplot system inspired by the "Violentómetro" (a Mexican tool for measuring violence).
The mobile interface democratizes access to this crucial information while maintaining user privacy and security. Interactive elements, including animated data reveals and
touch-responsive visualizations, help engage users while communicating complex findings about bidirectional violence patterns.
This project represents a significant step toward addressing the invisibility of violence in sapphic relationships while providing valuable data for policy-makers, healthcare providers, and community organizations. The platform not only presents research findings but also connects users with relevant support resources, creating a comprehensive tool for education and intervention. The development process involved extensive prototyping in Figma, with careful attention to accessibility and user experience. The final implementation uses modern
web technologies (HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript) to ensure broad compatibility and sustainable deployment.
