The Roots of Racism by Jack Beckwith

Roots of Racism is an interactive data story created by The Asian American Foundation (TAAF) and The DataFace, intended to uncover the factors behind a surge in anti-Asian hate during the COVID-19 pandemic.

We analyzed thousands of reported hate incidents to reveal how xenophobia, political rhetoric, and misinformation fueled this crisis. The site combines complex striking data visualizations and compelling storytelling to show how anti-Asian sentiment has deep roots in American history — and how it resurged in 2020. The result is an engaging, mobile-friendly experience that helps audiences confront and combat hate.
