Fade Factors: The Art and Science of Tattoo Longevity by Maryland Institute College of Art
Tattoos are defined by their permanence—yet few consider how ink evolves on living skin. 'Fade Factors' is a poster series that shines light on the influences that cause tattoos to fade and blur, from sun exposure and body placement to natural human immune response. Sometimes, tattoo settings can be intimidating, and consultations can lack visually-rich, science-backed information. By blending contemporary research and practitioner insights, this project demystifies the aging process behind tattoos. In doing so, 'Fade Factors' empowers clients and artists alike to make informed decisions that honor both personal expression and long-term visual impact, fostering a more transparent, collaborative tattoo culture.
Throughout the creation of this project, I consulted with 6 professional tattoo artists and collected survey data from a small sample of young adults interested in tattoos. Survey data revealed that a majority of respondents prioritize the aesthetic and longevity of their tattoos over cost, pain level, and session time.
This project was completed as part of the Data Analytics & Visualization M.P.S. program at the Maryland Institute College of Art.
