Beacons for Social Good by Gabrielle Schroeder

Viz For Social Good (VFSG) is a non-profit that helps mission-driven organisations create social change through data visualisation. VFSG runs several projects each year, each of which focuses on a different non-profit partner’s data and mission. For each project, VFSG volunteers then work individually or collaboratively to develop visualisations to meet the partner’s needs.

I designed this visualisation for VFSG’s March/April 2024 project, which focused on VFSG’s own data on volunteer submissions and non-profit partners from 2017 to 2023. I chose to make data art of each past VFSG project, with the goal of creating engaging visualisations that celebrate each project as well as VFSG’s community and growth.

I used the project brief’s description of VFSG’s visualisations as “beacon[s] of change” as inspiration. For each project, the volunteers’ visualisations are represented by rays of light that illuminate the mission and impact of the project’s non-profit partner, which is represented by the layered geometric shape.
