Prevalence of Depression in Europe by Kiel Science Communication Network

Depression affects millions, with prevalence varying by demographics and region. To illustrate this, we developed an interactive visualization, allowing users to explore depression prevalence in Europe through personalized data filtering.

Users can filter data by age, gender, education level and country, dynamically updating both the dataset and background imagery. These AI-generated visuals enhance engagement by reflecting the selected demographics.

We generated 96 AI-driven images to humanize the statistics and evoke an emotional connection. This blend of data and generative art encourages deeper exploration of mental health trends.

The visualization is openly available as an Observable notebook, inviting the data visualization community to explore, modify, and enhance the tool.

Available in English and German, the visualization ensures broad accessibility.

Part of Kiel Science Communication Network’s research, this project examines how aesthetic and emotional visualization affects knowledge acquisition. It integrates interactivity, personalization, and storytelling to foster a deeper understanding of depression.
