Céide Fields Bog: Data for Interdisciplinary Studies by antioch university
This project was my final for Designing with Data at MICA. I played with concepts for creating 8” x 5” data flashcards of environmental information to inspire my own digital humanities research connecting archaeobotany with medieval Irish manuscripts.
Botanical illustrations are modified from Pierre Joseph Redouté’s 19th century work and represent species found in ancient Ireland. The prototype deck includes a key to the Ogham “tree alphabet.” The Ogham tree associations represent a glimpse of the significant trees in the landscape at the time of a manuscript’s creation.
The project required at least six narrative points. Data is from Molloy and O’Connell’s within the Céide Fields Monument complex, County Mayo, Ireland. A cylinder of peat was extracted from the bog and segmented for analysis.
Uniform time segments are not possible and dates are estimates. The purpose is to expose general trends in tree populations across loosely defined eras with a greater concern on whether specific trees were present, whether they were a large portion of the tree population, and whether any significant shifts were demonstrated.
