Visualisation of the "20 Statements Test" research among students globally by Higher School of Economics

The project is a visualisation of the results of the psychological research called "20 Statements Test" (Kuhn & McPartland, 1954), which involved just over 100 students around the world. Their task was to write 20 sentences about themselves starting with "I am...". The test is aimed at identifying individualistic and collectivistic traits in people's thinking (depending on the countries where they grew up and lived), as well as researching self-identity.

All respondents are sorted according to the individualism score (score from 1 to 5) of the culture in the country where they study/live (inner circle of rays), and in the outer circle they are sorted according to the individualism score in the country where they come from, within the groups formed by the inner circle. Individualism score of countries is determined according to the typology of cultural dimensions developed by Gert Hofstede.

The basis of the visualisation is a flower consisting of 20 petals, each painted in one of 7 colours that have been assigned to the main categories of statements. Each flower is a person, and the petals are a set of sentences they have said about themselves.
