Deutsche Bahn ‘Call-A-Bike’ Rental Schedule by Elsa Ekevall
At the start of my journey the outcome was intended to be a dashboard designed to give fleet managers the tools needed to understand bike usage, manage resources efficiently, and possibly uncover new insights about customer behaviour. An interesting discover early on led to an unexpected diversion and the creation of this visualisation.
The analysis identified peak usage around 8 a.m. and 5-6 p.m. that corresponds with typical commuting patterns. But what was happening around midnight… why would over 1000 people use the call-a-bike service at that time on the 7th of July 2016?
Heatmaps converted into the style of a diary were used to visualise the average weekly bike rental demand and usage on the week 4th -10th July 2016. This approach was chosen to make the data more relatable and accessible, creating a connection to the rhythm of everyday life.
Special thanks to the DVS Mentorship Program and Kevin Ford for his insightful feedback and support which was invaluable in shaping this project.
