Functional Forms: Data-Encoded Miso Jars by feelancer
These miso jars transform recipe data into pottery itself. Each element of the material and form communicates:
- Red clay on the lids maps fermentation time (1 circle = 1 year).
- Tan clay expresses the koji-to-substrate ratio.
- Greyish-blue groggy clay indicates salt amount.
- Jar height reflects time—the smaller jar, half the size, signifies half the fermentation duration.
Unfinished exteriors preserve the clays’ natural tones and textures, while the glazed red interiors honor Japanese tradition, where koji and miso fermentation originated. By embedding data into structure, these pieces showcase how functional objects can also tell stories and elevate traditional practices through modern design. By merging data with craft, these jars reframe recipes as flexible systems—ratios and variables to explore, adjust, and that open the door to innovation.
