Educational inequality: the girls that get Left Behind

Globally, there are 76.7 million illiterate women, compared with 48.8 million men.

In order to bring this inequality to attention, UNESCO launched Left Behind, a powerful web interactive on girls' education in Sub-Saharan Africa.

The tool provides an invaluable starting point for getting to grips with educational inequality, whilst also exploring possible solutions.

The main message? A commitment to ending educational inequality is meaningless without more investment in basic resources - whether that be more female teachers or better toilets.

Left Behind was created by Montréal-based information design studio and 2014 Information is Beautiful Award winners, FFunction. Their work on Left Behind is a great example of data visualization becoming the bedrock of powerful, web-based storytelling.
