50 Black women have been killed by US police since 2015. Not one of the officers has been convicted. by Insider

For years, community leaders, activists, and journalists have called out the level at which the deaths of Black women by US police have gone under-reported. In 2020, there was a noticeable shift, however. Our newsroom like so many others across the country saw one name breakthrough on a national level: Breonna Taylor. After nearly four months, our news reporters worked to ensure Taylor wouldn't be the only name of a Black woman killed by police that was recognized by the public.

The team spent months reporting for this story, collecting data on 100 police officers, tracking down what happened in each incident, finding photos and confirming the names and details of the women killed, while sifting through so many pages of FOIA documents. It was a feat of journalism and teamwork.

Insider’s Associate Data Graphics Developer, Taylor Tyson designed and developed this story. The result is an impactful visualization explaining each of these women’s stories, as well as the staggering lack of consequences for the police who killed them. The story uses data visualizations to show how few of these cops have faced any discipline at all.
