The Changing Habitat of Polar Bears by George Koursaros

Climate change and its impact on the planet is a topic that can NOT be talked about too much.

With this visualization, I wanted to draw attention to climate change through the story of Polar Bears and the impact on their habitat, the North Pole.

This viz looks at two datasets. Firstly, it shows the current subpopulations of Polar Bears at the North Pole, with descriptions and size estimates. Secondly, it measures the amount of ice area/extent in the North Pole between 1979 - 2020, annually. Sadly, the observed trend clearly indicates a decline in the amount of ice over the period, with devastating impacts on polar bears and by extension the planet and ourselves.

This viz was recognized as Viz of the Day by the Tableau Public community.
