Police Force in Your State by Connor Rothschild

This is an interactive force diagram which allows visitors to see instances of officer-involved violence in their cities.

It allows exploration on two fronts. First, visitors can group the victims of police violence by various demographic categories and incident characteristics, such as race, sex, or armed status. Second, visitors can drill down into specific victims by clicking on their representative bubble. This will show more details about the incident, where it occurred, and link to a news story for further exploration.

We were intent on presenting this sensitive subject matter in an appropriate yet direct way. This led to our design choice of presenting the summary statistics in declarative sentence form. For example, when a user selects their department, the site reads in sentence form: “Between 2013 and 2022, the Houston Police Department killed 94 people.”
