Tour de France 1903-2022 by NA

The visualization covers 119 years of the Tour De France, the world's largest and most prestigious bicycle race. It was first organized in 1903 and has been held annually since then (except World Wars, WWI and WWII). The race is 3 weeks long and broken into day-long stages that vary in terrain and difficulty. Completing stages of a Tour de France within hours instead of days is achievable only by highly trained sportsmen.
The main goal of the project was to visualize this historical dataset in a simple and understandable way to educate non-experts and uninformed viewers about the event. To highlights its magnitude and intensity the following charts / data were used: map of countries where the Tour De France started (main start, Grand Depart); proportion of flat / hilly / mountain terrains; participants (starters and finishers) count; overall distance in km; winner’s average speed improvement from 1903 to 2022; countries who won the event with count of wins. Each chart has a description with a brief explanation / or legend / or parameter to switch between views.
The visualization was created using infographic style with minimal text usage, quick and clear communication of the information. The main tools which were used: Excel, Tableau (dynamic / static charts) and Inkscape (background, road shape and text).
