Population Density of Japan by Terence Teo

Using data from Kontur Population 2022, which contains hexagonal gridded population data at a resolution of 400m, I created this population density map of Japan with insets by region—Hokkaidō, Tōhoku, Kantō, Chūbu, Kansai, Chūgoku, Shikoku, and Kyūshū—using the rayshader package in R. rayshader allows us to create 3D visualisations that are pathtraced (which models the behaviour of light in reality and ensures that the shadows in the visualisation are realistic) _and_ reproducible.
