Pickup trucks: From workhorse to joyride by Axios
America has a love affair with pickup trucks. For the last 40 years, the Ford F-150 has been the best selling car in America, but during that time trucks have shifted from humble workhorse vehicles to supersized luxury cruisers. In this story, we show how culture and shifting consumer preferences drove this change, and the deadly consequences that resulted. We combine traditional data visualization with 3D modeling and illustration to show how over the years truck cabs have expanded while beds have shrunk to match consumers preference to use their trucks for shopping or commuting more than hauling or towing. We also show how trucks have become heavier and taller, leading to more deadly accidents with pedestrians and other vehicles.
