The History of Himalayan Mountaineering Expeditions by KCB

This project focuses on creating compelling data visualizations showcasing trends and insights from the Himalayan Database, a rich archive documenting mountaineering expeditions in Nepal. The visualizations will explore key patterns, such as expedition success rates, total number of summits, total fatalities, and the prominence of various Himalayan peaks.

By leveraging two datasets - peaks and expeditions (2020–2024) I uncovered stories hidden within the data and presented them engagingly and intuitively.

My process involved cleaning and structuring the data into tidy Tibbles for seamless analysis, followed by iteratively developing visualizations that prioritize clarity and impact.

I drew inspiration from historical mountaineering narratives, aiming to highlight quantitative trends and their human stories. I used R ggplot2 to create plots with slight help using Figma for editing which aided in crafting a final visual beauty that effectively tells the story of Himalayan mountaineering.
