Canadian Climate Institute report: Heat Exchange by Voilà:
The best solutions to climate change also come from the most ordinary places. In collaboration with Voilà:, the Canadian Climate Institute has developed a new report on the impact of today’s policies on the transition of buildings to a cleaner and more reliable heating system. The aim of this project was therefore to draw attention to the invisible challenges associated with gas networks, so that they are visible to all. The report demonstrates its ability to adapt to its expert audience thanks to the combination of our expertise in information design (clear data visualization) and graphic design (impactful visual identity). The report is based on an ambitious scientific study that tackles the inertia of current political decisions. It is intended to stir consumption habits, which implies a drastic shift in behavior when it comes to replacing one technology with another. We illustrated this concept of change in our design by seeking movement and balance between graphic elements. Given the Institute’s emphasis on analytical depth, we developed a graphic universe that conveys this visually through textures and motifs that evoke the world of technology.
Inspired by elements like heat flows, distribution networks, pipes, and other urban features, we created a series of gradations in form to illustrate the concept of transition. We consistently applied this graphic concept from the cover page across all visuals, ensuring that each figure is unique and impactful. To enhance clarity, we've introduced various methods of visualizing data, such as hatched box ranges or multiple outcomes for presenting uncertainty ranges in figures C, E, and H. To further improve readability, all graphics are presented on full pages, maximizing their visibility. Each graph's message is clearly defined in the title, and legends provide additional context for easy interpretation. The report's layout was carefully designed for clarity and easy navigation. From title levels and text boxes to exergues and recommendations, we created a clear framework to help readers quickly grasp key information. Content is presented hierarchically, with boxes, graphs, lists, and highlights adding dynamism and structure. For dense figures, small multiples were used to guide focus. We also prioritized accessibility by ensuring visible, readable color combinations for all users. Overall, this report portrays the Canadian Climate Institute as an agent of change who is not afraid of pushing back against interest groups to address climate change. Encouraging provincial governments to adopt measures in favor of heating solutions for buildings is the key message of this report. It also serves as an instigating tool in terms of energy transition protecting, in a way, the population from current energy infrastructures, which are often ill-prepared for changes. Based on market-based solutions to face the climate crisis, it encourages the energy transition and supports Canada in achieving carbon neutrality objectives.
