Namma Interventions by Glasgow School of Art

“Namma Interventions” or “Our Interventions” in Kannada (the local language of Bangalore) is a Data Humanism project that visualizes consequent unplanned human interventions in local ecosystems of Bangalore, India and the unforeseen consequences they bring. The project is inspired by Elizabeth Kolbert’s “Under a White Sky: The Nature of the Future,” which examines human efforts to solve the environmental problems they’ve created and their lasting impact on nature. Over the years, this cycle has harmed the environment, and the need to take responsibility and combat such issues cautiously demands that they be addressed. This project visualized three such interventions in Bangalore in the form of digital portraits:
1. Water Hyacinth in lakes
2. Deforestation for Metro construction
3. Geo-engineering, such as Atmospheric Sulphite Injection
Through collage making, a sense of belonging and familiarity was created in the project by using names of well-known places, maps and infrastructure of Bangalore.
