How do people in the UK and Italy deal with anxiety or depression by Massimiliano Belli
This data visualization delves into the coping mechanisms employed by individuals in the UK and Italy who have experienced significant anxiety or depression. It focuses on respondents who reported feeling so anxious or depressed that they were unable to maintain their regular daily activities for two weeks or longer. These individuals were asked if they engaged in specific activities to help improve their well-being. The visualization is designed with floral motifs, the length of each flower's stem visually signifies the proportion of the score, offering a nuanced view of the data. This artistic choice highlights the dual nature of mental health—its fragility and resilience—symbolized through the delicate beauty of flowers. Sourced from the 'Our World in Data' website, this dataset provides a rich foundation for storytelling. The goal of this project is to demonstrate that data visualization can be both interesting and immersive, even when tackling complex subjects like mental health. By comparing the UK and Italy, this work draws on personal connections: I lived in the UK for 12 years, I am Italian, and my daughter is British. This emotional bond between the two countries adds a layer of personal fascination to the analysis. Through this creative representation, the visualization aims to illuminate the diverse and personal journeys of those facing mental health issues, offering insight into how individuals in different cultural contexts seek solace and healing.
