The Science Academy Earthquake Series by Deniz Cem Önduygu

Following the catastrophic earthquakes of February 6, 2023, Bilim Akademisi - Science Academy, Türkiye launched projects to explore actionable solutions for building an earthquake-resistant Türkiye, culminating in the publication of a series of books. Since the series aims to mobilize the public and the local administrators on such a vital issue, information design was a crucial aspect of the project. I undertook the editorial design and the information design of the series in a holistic fashion. We worked on a consistent system of a rich variety of information graphics: Consulting with the scientists featured in the books, we produced data visualizations; diagrams and illustrations depicting physical or organizational structures and processes; and geographical visualizations mapping earthquakes, faults, plates, etc. The book titled “The Science Academy Earthquake Discussions: We Can Do Much Better!” is based on the discussions and experience in the events held by the Science Academy after the earthquakes of 2023. The second book, “Earthquake-Resistant Cities: A Roadmap” offers a science-based and concrete roadmap to make cities earthquake-resistant. Both books adopt a multidisciplinary approach, featuring experts on geology, engineering, management, economics, public health, psychology, ecology, law, and business.
