The Blue Planet by Ansgar Wolsing
This visualization presents a breakdown of Earth's surface composition of water and land. It illustrates that the majority of the Earth's surface is covered by water, with almost all of it being salt water in the oceans. Only a small fraction of the planet’s water is freshwater, with most of it trapped in glaciers and ice caps, while an even smaller portion is found in rivers and lakes. Land makes up less than a third of the Earth's surface.
The chart was created as a contribution to the #30DayMapChallenge 2024, a global initiative encouraging creative cartographic storytelling. It incorporates ESRI World Imagery for a realistic depiction of each surface type.
