The Joy of Painting Data by Elsie Lee-Robbins

I created this piece for the Data Is Plural challenge, which invited us to visualize data about Bob Ross, an artist that painted an oil painting on each episode of his TV show, The Joy of Painting. For my piece, I wanted to capture the context of what the data was truly about by creating a visualization as an oil painting. In Excel, I created a stacked area chart of elements that appear in Bob Ross paintings. I ordered elements as if they were a landscape, with the sun peeking out behind snow-capped mountains. I chose colors reminiscent of each element, rendering them on the canvas with slight variations in color and visible brushstrokes. I added labels with Adobe Illustrator.
