World Hostility Graph by Maximilian Tarrach
The World Hostility Graph displays the totality of the world's recorded conflicts from 1816 to 2014. In 198 years, 199 countries created 4726 conflicts whose outcomes created our modern world.
The data is provided by the Correlates of War project including the entire list of conflicts, participants, outcomes and more detailed information. This data is enhanced by me by adding the associated continent for each country to create another layer of depth.
The graph consists of hierarchical edge bundling combined with a bar chart. Each of the countries displayed is sorted by continent. For each country one bar exists, adding information about the country’s continent through its color and in how many conflicts the country has been involved in by height. Hovering a country name highlights the edges connecting it with every other party involved in past conflicts. In addition, more data about the country’s conflicts is shown via numerical values. A popup displays the exact number of conflicts, how often the country was a trigger, how many conflicts ended in the use of force and how many ended in a war.
Objective of the project is to highlight the complexity and multiplicity of the world's conflicts and the unequal distribution of participants.
