Plateful Insights by Razvan Zamfira

"Plateful Insights" is a collection of six hand-built ceramic plates, each representing a unique narrative about global nutrition. These plates are more than just dining accessories; they serve as a tactile exploration of data—a physical manifestation of statistics that often remain confined to digital screens. Each plate corresponds to one of the six world regions, with its size determined by the difference between the average supply of kilocalories (kcal) per person per day and the minimum kcal requirement per person. The final size of each plate visually reflects the surplus food available in each region, offering a commentary on the disparities and abundance in global food distribution.

In addition to their size, each plate features a donut chart that visualizes the percentage of daily caloric intake derived from fats, animal and vegetable proteins, and carbohydrates. These tactile and visual elements encourage a more intimate and reflective interaction with the data, fostering a deeper understanding of global nutrition issues.

The project emerged from our broader goal of experimenting with innovative ways to communicate data and make it tangible. Global nutrition statistics are often abstract and inaccessible, hidden behind digital interfaces. We sought to transform these data points into a physical form that would engage people on a personal level. By using ceramics—objects that symbolize daily consumption—we created not only functional pieces but also data canvases, merging the worlds of art and information.
